A 68-year-old man is fighting for his life after being run over by his own car in Heidelberg West, and police are pleading with the driver to hand herself in
The man had been inside his home for about a minute before a woman took the running Honda CR-V from outside on Saturday night.
A 68-year-old man is in a critical condition after being run over by his own car outside his home in Heidelberg West, and police are asking the woman who was driving it to hand herself in.
Officers were called to Blackwood Parade about 7.30pm on Saturday.
The man had left his 2018 Honda CR-V running outside the house and gone inside. Police say he had been in there about a minute.
CCTV shows a woman in the street before she got into it.
“She's been confronted by the car owner and a verbal altercation has started,” Detective Acting Inspector Paul Lineham of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said.
She drove off anyway, over the top of him, and left at speed.
His wife was on the road trying to save his life.
He was taken to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He remains critical.
“I've spoken to the family this morning. They are absolutely traumatised with the events that happened on Saturday night,” Detective Acting Inspector Lineham said.
“Incredibly angry that this happened and that the father got left on the road with these life-threatening injuries.”
Police say there is no question the driver knew what she had done.
“Time for panic is over. That's it. It's time for you to hand yourself in right now,” he said.
“Don't wait to be arrested to decide that you're now going to show some remorse. If you are truly remorseful, if you have any shred of decency at all, hand yourself in now and let yourself be known to police.”
The car has not been found. It is a 2018 Honda CR-V with the registration AXA625, though police say the plates may have been taken off it by now.
The woman is described as being in her 40s, Caucasian, of slim build, with long dark hair.
The line police keep coming back to is the one about the minute. A car left running in a driveway while someone ducks inside is an ordinary suburban thing that happens ten thousand times a night in Melbourne.
What makes this different is not that the car was taken. It is that a man stood in front of it and the driver kept going.
The investigation is ongoing and a crime scene was established at the address.
